1. Professional Development: Introduction to Electronics Through Troubleshooting

This workshop introduces basic principles of electricity and electronics in a unique way. Rather than starting with theory, participants will work their way around the room, examining and identifying the problems in several real circuits that are each broken in some way. Each circuit will represent a common electronic device, such as a remote control or a microwave oven clock. Participants will be given clues, such as schematics, and hints about which measurements to take until they find the problem. The instructors will help each participant start at their own knowledge level to become more comfortable using documentation, internet searches, and electrical measurement equipment to solve problems.

2. Professional Development: The Product Design Process

This course provides an overview of how product designers take an idea and produce a working product ready for manufacturing. The first step in the cycle involves researching a market and industry as well as identifying similar products and technologies. From there we will examine the creative process of ideation: brainstorming based on the research results. Next, we will investigate how 3D modeling techniques reduce development time and discuss appropriate 3D modeling software, prototyping processes and materials for different types of products. Finally, we will look at beta programs and how to determine when the product is ready for manufacturing.
The first hour will cover the overview, and in the second hour, the instructor will provide brief individualized public feedback on how to structure the product development process for each of six products.
This overview course will be followed in future weeks by more specific workshops that explore steps and skills in the product development cycle in depth.

3. Experience Cleantech: Composting As A Waste Management Strategy
Organic waste makes up about one third of California’s waste stream, most of which currently ends up in landfills. Yet this waste could be a valuable resource when properly composted. This workshop will look at composting as a waste management strategy. Participants will learn about a worm composting system and help build a compost pile that will heat up to over 140 degrees. The class will cover how to set up a composting system at your home, even in an apartment or other small space, and also touch on ways to scale up a composting system for a school or small business.

4. Experience Cleantech: Power Electronic Devices with Heat
Did you know that the excess heat from a car’s engine or even the heat from the sun can be converted to electrical energy? A small device called a thermocouple converts a temperature difference between two elements into electricity. Energy is lost in the form of heat radiating from elements such as a car’s engine block or exhaust pipe, but we can capture some of the heat energy to power other systems. Converting energy to heat can be useful in emergency situations where we need to generate small amounts of electricity to power a mobile phone or create a makeshift flashlight. In this course, we will learn how to create a basic energy conversion mechanism that converts heat into a voltage potential, capable of charging a mobile phone.

5. Experience Cleantech: Build Your Own Water Filter

Many of us rely on water filters without understanding what substances they remove and what remains in the water. We will learn the basic science behind water filtration systems and explore different ways to reuse water. We will also get a glimpse of the process of extracting salt from water and how filtration systems are powered. Participants will build their own filtration system with natural materials. The filter is a small-scale demonstration of a filtration system for home irrigation water.
